My spouse told me not to hire an attorney, should I listen?

Posted on October 27, 2020 by Chris Kirker

If your spouse is telling you not to hire an attorney, really think long and hard about why that is. It’s unfair, I think, for someone to have the benefit of legal advice and a relationship with an attorney and the other side to not have that same relationship. If someone is suggesting to you that you do not hire an attorney, I would be very cautious about that suggestion.

More often than not, we see the person suggesting not to hire an attorney might have something that they don’t want to reveal. Or perhaps, if you were to have the benefit of legal advice, you’d be able to determine that what they’re proposing that you agree to is actually not in your interest. So I suggest that you consider hiring an attorney or at least talking to an attorney because that gives you the information you need to be able to analyze the offers that they’re making to you.
