Stu Shapley has 20+ years of practice experience, and began his career practicing intellectual property law for Fortune 500 companies before transitioning to family law. An avid builder of things – ranging from home renovations to musical instruments, and a volunteer coach and group leader in his children’s activities, Stu’s approach to legal practice is an extension of his deep-rooted commitment to service and craftsmanship.
Stu Shapley is an experienced attorney who came to practicing family law after several years practicing intellectual property law, principally patent law. From his experience working with engineers to translate technical ideas into hard IP assets, as well as experience interfacing with corporate management and legal teams to defend and monetize IP assets, Stu has a solid foundation in handling the economic and business dimensions of his clients’ family law matters. Put differently, Stu leverages his IP and technical background to understand and present complex issues in simple and resonant terms.
Stu graduated cum laude from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. While in law school, Stu was on the editorial boards of the Virginia Environmental Law Journal and the Virginia Journal of Law and Technology.
