House Bill 380 shortens the waiting period for a no-fault divorce to one year. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf signed the bill into law on Tuesday, October 11.
In writing the legislation, Pennsylvania State Representative Tarah Toohil said there are benefits to shortening the waiting time. The Luzerne County attorney said the change will hopefully reduce the trauma that the divorce process brings to children. She noted: “Divorcing couples…find themselves in lengthy court battles. Children end up being pawns in a divorce game and people end up going broke due to legal fees and a failure to manage mortgages and bills in a timely fashion.”
